Microsoft Rushes Patch for Zero-day Exploit: Includes XP

Five days after a critical Windows vulnerability was announced, Microsoft has issued a patch for the Exploit, which is said to effect all versions of Internet Explorer. Hackers are already taking advantage of this security flaw, so the patch was rushed by Microsoft in order to protect users. It was also clear how severe the threat was, when it was learned that Microsoft intended to also include XP in the patching.

It was also noted previously, that Microsoft had provided a workaround for the exploit but since that was only available to business users, it was felt that rushing this patch was important enough to release it before Microsoft’s regularly scheduled updates.

This security flaw was previously unknown by the company, but it is said that it can be used to possibly install malicious software without any user interaction.  “An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could gain the same user rights as the current user. Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less impacted than users who operate with administrative user rights.” Says Microsoft in their monthly security bulletin.

How to Receive the Update

Any user that has automatic updates turned on should not have to worry about receiving the update, but it is recommended to download this patch manually as soon as possible. Users who do not have automatic updates turned on can download the patch just by going to the Windows Update service on their PC. For XP users who wanted to download the patch manually, you can go here, and just download the version the corresponds to your version of XP and Internet Explorer.

Microsoft also surprised users, when they announced that they would also include Windows XP in the patching, which they stopped support for back in April. While Microsoft is still encouraging users to migrate to Windows 7 and Windows 8, they felt that this update was critical enough to include XP in the patching.

Additionally, any user having complications with applying the patches can visit here on Microsoft’s website for assistance.
